Before you plan the drive, confirm you're actually approved to visit. In the Bureau of Prisons, you can only visit an inmate if they've added you to their approved visiting list and the BOP has cleared you. Not cleared yet? You could be denied at the door - even after traveling hours to get there. Save yourself the frustration and verify your status first.

Entering BOP grounds means agreeing to searches - your person, your vehicle, your belongings. Refuse, and you won't get in. The simplest way to avoid a wasted trip? Arrive expecting screening and keep what you bring to a minimum.

Prohibited Objects

  • Cameras of any type
  • Recording equipment
  • Telephones (including cell phones)
  • Radios
  • Pagers
  • Electronic devices
  • Weapons
  • Explosives
  • Drugs or intoxicants
  • Currency

Dress code violations are one of the most common reasons visits get delayed or denied. The BOP's visiting guidance lists several clothing items as generally not permitted: revealing shorts; halter tops; bathing suits; see-through garments of any type; crop tops; low-cut blouses or dresses; leotards; spandex; miniskirts; backless tops; hats or caps; sleeveless garments; skirts two inches or more above the knee; and dresses or skirts with a high-cut split in the back, front, or side. Color matters too - avoid anything that looks like inmate clothing, including khaki or green military-type clothing. When in doubt, go conservative. Choose something comfortable that's clearly not club wear, beach wear, or uniform-like.

  • Don’t bring prohibited items like weapons, explosives, drugs/intoxicants, or currency

  • If you’re unsure about an outfit, change it before you leave - being turned away is usually avoidable
