Before Your First Visit to USP Coleman 1: A Complete Checklist
Your first visit will go much smoother if you confirm you're approved, show up at the right time, and arrive ready for screening. This checklist covers the most common reasons people get turned away.
Before making plans, confirm you're actually eligible to visit. You can only enter if the person you're visiting has added you to their approved visiting list and the Bureau of Prisons has cleared you. If you're not cleared yet - or if they're new to the facility and their list isn't set up - you can drive all that way and still get turned away at the door.
Lock down the day and time. BOP institutions generally offer visiting on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays - sometimes during the week too - but verify the specific schedule for USP Coleman 1 before you leave home. I recommend checking again close to your travel day. Schedules shift, and weekends get crowded.
Dress conservatively. The BOP expects attire appropriate for a mixed group of men, women, and children - provocative or revealing outfits can get you denied entry. Skip revealing shorts, crop tops, see-through garments, low-cut or backless tops, miniskirts, spandex or leotards, sleeveless garments, and skirts with high slits.
Expect to be searched. By entering - or even attempting to enter - Bureau grounds or facilities, you're consenting to searches under BOP policy and federal regulations. Refuse a search, and staff can prohibit you from entering.
- ✓ Weapons
- ✓ Explosives
- ✓ Drugs
- ✓ Cameras (of any type)
- ✓ Recording equipment
- ✓ Telephones
- ✓ Radios
- ✓ Pagers
- ✓ Other electronic devices
Show up with prohibited items or refuse to comply with screening, and you'll be turned away. Leave electronics and anything that could be considered contraband at home - or secured elsewhere before you enter. Follow staff instructions during the search process so your visit doesn't end before it starts.
Don't expect privacy inside. The visiting area may be monitored, including restrooms located in that area. This supervision is how the facility maintains security during visits.
- Build in extra time - Searches and check-in can take longer than you expect, especially on popular visiting days.
- Confirm you’re approved before you leave - Make sure you’re on the approved visiting list and cleared by the Bureau of Prisons so you don’t risk being denied on arrival.
- Verify the visiting hours for the day you’re going - Visiting is generally on weekends and holidays (and sometimes weekdays), but you should confirm the specific USP Coleman 1 schedule before you travel.
Reminder: Reconfirm both your approval status and the visiting schedule the day you travel. It's the simplest way to avoid a wasted trip.
