Who Can Visit an Inmate at FCI Danbury? Understanding the 10-Person Limit

You can't just show up at FCI Danbury and visit—approval depends on Bureau of Prisons (BOP) visitor categories and whether you're on the inmate's visiting list. Here's how the categories work, what the 10-person limit actually applies to, and what to do if you're not approved yet.

Who Can Visit an Inmate at FCI Danbury? Understanding the 10-Person Limit

The BOP recognizes several visitor types who can be approved at FCI Danbury. Relatives are one category. "Other approved visitors" is another - this includes clergy and religious group members, civic group members, former or prospective employers, sponsors, parole advisors, attorneys, and foreign officials. Friends and associates? Also recognized, but with a specific cap (more on that below).

Note: The “10-person limit” applies to the friends/associates category specifically - not to every possible visitor type.

FCI Danbury allows "no more than 10 friends/associates" on an inmate's approved list. If you're trying to visit as a friend - not a relative or official visitor type - you're competing for one of those limited spots. Already 10 friends approved? Someone in that category would generally need to be removed before you can be added.

This cap only applies to friends/associates - not the entire visiting list. Relatives and other approved visitor categories (clergy, attorneys, employers, sponsors, parole advisors, civic groups, foreign officials) exist separately. That's why people call it a "friends list" limit rather than a total cap on everyone who could ever be approved.

The inmate is the one who places people on their approved visiting list at FCI Danbury. But even if they add you, you can't visit until the BOP clears you. Both steps are required - being on the list and being cleared - before you'll be allowed through the door.

  1. Ask the inmate to start the request - Visiting approval runs through the inmate’s visiting list, so they’ll typically initiate the process for adding you.
  2. Complete the BP-A0629 form - Fill out the BP-A0629 visitor questionnaire and release form.
  3. Return it to the institution address - Send the completed BP-A0629 back to the institution address as directed on the form so you can be considered for visiting privileges.
  4. Wait for BOP clearance - Even after the paperwork is submitted, you can’t visit until the BOP clears you.

Before making plans, verify FCI Danbury's current visiting rules and schedule directly with the facility. BOP institutions generally offer visiting on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays - sometimes weekdays too - but exact hours and local restrictions can change. This is especially important if you're visiting as a friend/associate, since that category maxes out at 10 approved people.
