Before sending money through MoneyGram ExpressPayment, confirm the person has physically arrived at a Bureau of Prisons (BOP) facility. Sending funds too early - before they're in BOP custody - means the deposit won't reach them, and sorting it out is a hassle.

The Account Number format has to be exact. Enter the inmate's eight-digit register number (no spaces, no dashes), then the inmate's last name immediately after - nothing in between. Example: 12345678DOE. A misplaced dash, an extra space, or a misspelled last name can get the transaction rejected or routed to the wrong account.

When MoneyGram asks for the Receive Code, use 7932. For the company information, use “Federal Bureau of Prisons” and set the City & State to Washington, DC.

Send between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and the money typically posts within 2–4 hours. That's the window to hit if you need funds on the books quickly for commissary. Transactions submitted after 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time don't post overnight. Instead, they go through at 7:00 a.m. Eastern Time the next morning. Late-night sends? Expect the deposit to show up the following day.

Note: The cutoff for faster posting is 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time. After that, deposits post at 7:00 a.m. Eastern Time the next morning.
