How to Visit Facility

Before you plan the trip, review the facility's visiting regulations. Also check any state and local travel advisories that could affect your route or timing. A quick look up front saves you from showing up unprepared or driving out on a day when conditions make the visit harder than it needs to be.

Call the facility before you leave to confirm the visiting schedule. The number for schedule confirmation is 603-342-4000.

The visiting hours posted on the facility page reflect the typical schedule, but they don't cover every situation. If your loved one is in a special housing unit, visits may run on a modified schedule. And even when hours are posted, the Warden can restrict or cancel visiting for safety and security reasons, including severe weather or other incidents that disrupt normal operations.

Federal rules guarantee an inmate at least four hours of visiting time per month. In practice, though, the Warden can still limit how long each visit lasts or how many visitors are allowed at one time. That means the time you actually get on a particular trip may be less than you expect.

Steps to Follow

  • Confirm the inmate has placed you on their approved visiting list.
  • Make sure you have been cleared by the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) before you try to schedule or show up.
  • Ask whether you need to complete a visitor questionnaire/release (BP-A0629) and be prepared for the institution to check with law enforcement or crime information agencies when determining visitor suitability.
  • Call the facility before departing (603-342-4000) to confirm the current visiting schedule.
  • Ask whether any special housing situations (such as special housing unit placement) change the normal schedule.
  • Check for any restrictions or cancellations due to safety, security, severe weather, or incidents impacting normal operations.
  • Plan for possible limits on visit length and how many visitors can be in the visiting room at once, even though inmates are entitled to at least four hours of visiting time per month.
How to Visit Facility

Before you travel, verify two things directly with the facility: the correct contact number for visitation questions, and the current visiting schedule for the day you plan to go. Posted hours show the typical schedule but don't always reflect special cases.

  1. Confirm you’re on the approved visiting list: The inmate has to add you to their visiting list before you can visit.
  2. Ask whether you are cleared by the BOP: Approval includes being cleared by the Bureau of Prisons.
  3. Check whether paperwork is required: Ask if you need to complete the visitor questionnaire/release (BP-A0629) or any other forms, and how the facility wants them submitted.

Note: Visiting hours can change for special housing situations, and the Warden may restrict or cancel visits for safety, weather, or operational reasons. Ask about these issues and any limits on visit length or number of visitors, even with the four-hours-per-month minimum in place.
