Adding an Inmate to Your TDCJ Visitor Profile — What Happens After You Click 'Request Approval' (Ferguson Unit)

Trying to visit someone at the Ferguson Unit? Adding them to your TDCJ Online Visitation profile is the first step. Here's what happens after you click "Request Approval," and what you can do while you wait.

To add an inmate to your TDCJ Online Visitation profile, you'll search using their 8-digit TDCJ or SID number. Fewer or more than 8 digits won't match the right person. Double-check the number before you submit.

Don't know the 8-digit number? Use the TDCJ Offender Search on the TDCJ website to look it up first. Once you have the correct TDCJ or SID number, head back to the visitation system and use it to add the inmate to your profile.

Once you find the correct person in the search results, select your relationship from the dropdown and click "Request Approval." After you confirm, the Relationship Request gets sent to the inmate's unit of assignment so TDCJ staff can verify the relationship between you and the inmate.

After you click "Request Approval" and confirm, you're in a waiting period. The inmate's unit of assignment needs to receive the request, and TDCJ staff have to verify the relationship on their end. Nothing is "wrong" just because you don't get instant approval. This is normal. The request simply has to be reviewed at the unit level.

Denied or Timing

  • Ask the unit whether your Relationship Request has been received and is being processed.
  • Confirm whether the visitor and inmate relationship was approved or denied before you make travel plans.
  • If you are coordinating with other family or friends, make sure everyone is working from the same status so nobody assumes they are cleared when they are not.

Note: There's no guaranteed timeline for relationship verification. Don't assume it will be approved quickly just because you clicked "Request Approval."

Plan around the weekend visit limit, too. Each inmate is allowed only one visit per weekend, so everyone on the inmate's Visitors List should coordinate with each other and with the inmate. If someone else has already visited that weekend, later visitors can be turned away at the unit.
