Ferguson Unit Mail: What to Send to the Dallas Digital Processing Center (and What to Send to Ferguson)

As of September 6, 2023, the Ferguson Unit moved onto TDCJ’s digital mail platform. That means most personal mail no longer goes straight to the unit first - it’s routed through the Digital Mail Processing Center, where it’s sorted, scanned, and uploaded to the person’s secure tablet so they can view it there.

Sending personal letters, greeting cards, or photos to someone at the Ferguson Unit? Mail them to the Digital Mail Processing Center in Dallas. TDCJ routes these items there to be scanned and uploaded to the inmate's secure tablet. The addressing format matters. Include the inmate's full first and last name along with their TDCJ number, and use the Dallas PO Box exactly as listed. Missing or incorrect details can slow things down.

  • Texas Department of Criminal Justice
  • Inmate’s full first and last name + TDCJ number
  • PO Box 660400
  • Dallas, TX 75266-0400

Not everything goes to Dallas. Some categories must be mailed directly to the Ferguson Unit instead. Those exceptions include legal mail, media mail, and items like books, magazines, packages, and subscriptions from verified publishers. Send these to the digital processing address and they may not be handled correctly - get them to the unit.

Legal mail: Send legal mail directly to the Ferguson Unit, not to the Digital Mail Processing Center.

Books, magazines, and media mail: Media mail - along with books, magazines, packages, and verified-publisher subscriptions - should be mailed directly to the Ferguson Unit.

Ferguson Unit Mail: What to Send to the Dallas Digital Processing Center (and What to Send to Ferguson)

Most mail problems come down to two things: wrong address or wrong destination. Before you seal the envelope, double-check the inmate's full name and TDCJ number. Make sure you're using the Dallas Digital Mail Processing Center address for personal letters, photos, and greeting cards. Then ask yourself what you're actually sending. Legal mail, media mail, books, magazines, packages, or subscriptions from verified publishers? Skip Dallas - send those directly to the Ferguson Unit.

  • Confirm the inmate’s full first and last name and TDCJ number.
  • Match the item type: personal letters/photos/greeting cards vs. exceptions.
  • Send personal mail to the Dallas Digital Mail Processing Center address.
  • Send legal mail and verified-publisher items (including books/magazines) directly to the Ferguson Unit.
  1. Re-check the address line-by-line - for Dallas processing, the envelope needs the inmate’s full first and last name plus their TDCJ number, and it must be addressed to Texas Department of Criminal Justice, PO Box 660400, Dallas, TX 75266-0400.
  2. Confirm you sent it to the right place - personal letters, photos, and greeting cards go to Dallas; exceptions like books, magazines, packages, and verified-publisher subscriptions should go to the Ferguson Unit.
  3. Keep the timing change in mind - since the Ferguson Unit moved to digital mail on September 6, 2023, personal mail is handled through the scanning/upload process rather than being delivered as original paper correspondence.
