If approved, an extended visit can last up to four hours. But it only happens if time and space allow that day - availability at the unit determines whether you get the longer visit or stick with the regular schedule.

Note: Extended visits are discretionary. Even if you qualify based on distance, the unit can limit or deny the request depending on space, time, and security needs.

A split visit works differently. It doesn't add extra time - it divides your visit into separate blocks. For example, one group of visitors could come for the first half, and a different group for the second. To request a split visit, tell the visitation officer during check-in.

  1. Arrive and start check-in - begin the normal visitor check-in process.
  2. Ask for a split visit - tell the visitation officer during check-in that you want a split visit.
  3. Follow the officer’s directions - the officer will tell you how the visit will be divided and what to do next.

  • Confirm the person you’re visiting is assigned to Formby State Jail.
  • Confirm they currently have visitation privileges.
  • Call the unit before you travel for final confirmation.
  • If you’re traveling more than 250 miles one way, ask the unit about requesting an extended visit and whether the warden (or designee) can authorize it for your trip.

On the day of your visit, arrive early. Extended visits depend on available time and space. Split visits require you to speak up at check-in. Getting there with time to spare gives you a better chance to handle questions, confirm approvals, and make your request before things get busy.

If you're traveling a long way, call the unit one last time before you leave - or at least before you hit the road. Confirm the visit is still on and nothing has changed. That quick check can save you a wasted trip.

Even when you do everything right, longer or split visits can still be limited. Extended visits only happen if time and space allow. Visitation can also be restricted if there are rule violations or security concerns - for either you or the inmate. Visits may be temporarily suspended during lockdowns, serious incidents like escapes or disturbances, or health and safety emergencies.

One more thing: all visits are monitored electronically, except attorney-client visits. If you can't get the in-person time you were hoping for, remote video visits may be an option. These are scheduled through the vendor's website. Eligible inmates can have one remote video visit per month - up to 60 minutes - in addition to regular contact visits.

  • Confirm unit assignment and visitation privileges before you travel, and call the unit for final confirmation.
  • Have a backup plan in case visitation is temporarily restricted due to security issues, lockdowns, disturbances, or a health/safety emergency.
  • If you’re hoping for a longer visit, plan for the possibility that time/space limits could still prevent an extended visit that day.
