Visiting hours are Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This is the window most families plan around for weekend visits.

TDCJ organizes visits using "visiting cycles." Each cycle runs Monday through Sunday. When picking which weekend to travel, think in terms of that Monday-to-Sunday window - visit frequency is counted within each cycle.

Note: Before you travel, confirm the current unit schedule and what visit options are being offered - availability can vary by unit and by the type of visit you’re trying to have.

Eligible inmates can receive one visit per visiting cycle. That usually means one visit per Monday-through-Sunday week - something to keep in mind if you're traveling from out of town.

Regular visits last two hours. The clock starts once both the inmate and visitor(s) are present - not when you arrive at the unit. If you're late or processing takes longer than expected, your visit time shrinks.

TDCJ offers different visit types - Regular, Contact, and Video/Tablet - but not every option is available at every unit. What you can request depends on your relationship to the inmate, how the visiting area is set up, and the inmate's current privileges.

Remote video visits through a kiosk, if available and the inmate is eligible, are allowed once per month for up to 60 minutes. This is in addition to contact or general visits - not a replacement. It's a useful extra option when travel is difficult.

Tip: If the online visitation system is available for the unit, it may show an option to request an Extended or Special Visit when you’re selecting a visit type.

Extended visits aren't automatic. The warden (or designee) may approve them for visitors traveling more than 250 miles one way, but only when the unit can accommodate it.

Approved extended visits can last up to four hours. Even with approval, practical limits like time and space mean you won't always get the full four hours.

Verify Unit

  • Confirm the current visiting hours window you should plan around (Saturday–Sunday, 8:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m.).
  • Ask which visit types are available for your situation (Regular, Contact, Video/Tablet), since not all types are offered everywhere.
  • If you’re trying for an Extended or Special Visit, check whether the online visitation system offers that request option.
  • If you’re counting on a remote kiosk video visit, verify eligibility and whether it’s available, since it follows a once-per-month, up-to-60-minute limit when offered.
  • Get confirmation before you drive - especially if your trip depends on a specific visit type or an extended visit approval.
