At TDCJ units like Garza East, visits happen on Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This is the standard schedule most families work around - especially helpful if you're traveling and need to coordinate with others.

Note: Each unit's warden controls visitation, so confirm the current schedule and any unit-specific rules before making the drive.

Regular visits last two hours. The clock doesn't start until both the inmate and visitor(s) are together in the visiting area. Arrive early - delays at check-in or waiting for the inmate to be brought out won't extend your time.

TDCJ operates on a "visiting cycle," and inmates typically get one visit per cycle. If multiple family members or friends want to visit, coordinate ahead of time. Otherwise, someone might show up only to be turned away because a visit already happened that cycle.

Contact visits allow physical contact between visitors and inmates. These take place either inside the unit in a designated visiting area or outside the main building within the fenced perimeter, depending on how the unit handles visitation that day.

  • G1 custody/class - eligible for one contact visit per week
  • J1 custody/class - eligible for one contact visit per week
  • J2 custody/class - eligible for one contact visit per week

Even when you've followed the schedule, visits can get temporarily restricted or canceled. This happens for rule violations, security concerns involving an inmate or visitor, lockdowns, or serious incidents like escapes or disturbances. Health or safety emergencies can also pause visitation.

Note: The warden manages and enforces visitation rules at the unit. If there's been a lockdown or emergency, confirm visitation status before you travel.
