How to Get Approved to Visit Someone at Gilmer County Detention Center
Want to visit someone at Gilmer County Detention Center? You'll need to get approved through the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) first. Once approved, you can request a scheduled visit using the state's visitation form.
You can't just show up and request a visit. First, you need to be on the approved visitor list. Fill out the Visitation Request Form and submit it to Gilmer County Detention Center. Once approved, you can move forward with scheduling visits through the Georgia DOC visitation form.
GDC handles "immediate family" differently than other visitors. Immediate family typically means parents, siblings, spouse, grandparents, grandchildren, and children. Fall outside that circle - step-relatives, in-laws, cousins, friends, pastors, employers, or other supportive relationships - and you'll go through the "significant relationship" approval path instead.
Note: For significant relationship visitors, the offender must initiate the request. The Warden/Superintendent reviews it before you can be approved.
- Gather the offender’s GDC ID - you’ll need it to complete the Visitation Request Form.
- Enter your name and contact details - the form asks for your last name, first name, and (optionally) middle name, plus an email address.
- List your relationship to the offender - be clear and accurate, since relationship type can affect how approval is handled.
- Add your date of birth - this is part of the requester information collected on the form.
- Choose your ID type carefully - the form includes ID type options such as Driver’s License, State ID, or None.
- If you’re under 18, don’t select Driver’s License or State ID - those options are only selectable for people who are 18 or older.
Once you've filled out the Visitation Request Form, submit it to Gilmer County Detention Center. Approval comes first - then you can request a scheduled visit through the Georgia DOC visitation form.
Not immediate family? The offender has to start the process for you. They'll complete the "Significant Relationship Visitor Application for Visitation Privilege," which goes to the Warden/Superintendent for review. After a decision is made, the offender gets notified - and it's on them to let you know whether you were approved.
Once approved, request your visit through the Georgia DOC visitation form. Planning a weekend or holiday visit? Submit early. Requests have cutoff deadlines, and missing one can push your visit back.
- ✓ Weekend visits: request cutoff is 5:00 PM on Wednesday of the same week
- ✓ State holiday visits: request cutoff is 5:00 PM three days before the holiday
