Types

  • Medical Request - used when requesting medical services.
  • Mental Health Service Request - used when requesting to speak with a mental health counselor or professional.
  • Legal Services Request - used when requesting to speak with attorneys/counsel; this request is automatically emailed to the Grant County Public Defender’s Office.
  • Probation Service Request - used to contact a District Court probation officer and ask questions.
  • Spanish-language versions (some sections) - the handbook notes Spanish forms are available for some request sections, including Mental Health and Probation.

Note: Spanish versions are available for some KITE sections, including Mental Health and Probation requests.

To request counseling, inmates use the Mental Health Service Request section of the KITE. This covers requests to speak with a mental health counselor or professional - including for mental health, alcohol, or drug-related concerns.

If it's urgent: For immediate mental health, alcohol, or drug-related needs, the inmate should tell an officer right away so contact can be made on the spot.

Grant County Jail also offers Recovery Coach services. These focus on post-release resources - helpful for anyone trying to line up support and stability before getting out.

  1. Ask the medical clinic for a release form - the handbook says the release of records form is available from the medical clinic.
  2. Sign the release of records - this is required if the inmate was prescribed medications or received mental health services in the community before.
  3. Allow time for records to be obtained and evaluated - signing the release allows those prior records to be requested and reviewed.

One detail that trips people up: KITE messages sent through dorm kiosks are reviewed by staff. These kiosk KITES are not confidential - assume anything typed can be read during the review process.

Legal/privacy tip: Confidential legal communication should go through legal mail, not the KITE or dorm kiosk system.

Supporting someone from the outside? Remind them that Grant County uses KITES for written requests to staff. There's a specific Mental Health Service Request section for asking to speak with a counselor. If they're thinking about reentry, encourage them to ask about Recovery Coach services - these can help connect them with post-release resources.
