How to Get Approved to Visit Someone at Grants NM Corrections
Getting approved to visit is mostly paperwork and patience—but a few NMCD rules can stop an application cold if you miss them. Here's how to submit the right form, avoid common rejection reasons, and understand what you'll sign before visiting at Grants.
NMCD has a specific definition of
Some people can't get approved, even if the inmate wants them on the list. Current or former NMCD employees and contractors are generally barred from visiting - unless they're the inmate's lawful spouse or immediate family member and the Warden approves. Convicted felons cannot visit any inmate at any NMCD facility.
Bringing a minor? Plan ahead. Children won't be allowed in without proper ID and must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or responsible adult relative. The only exception: if the minor can show documented proof of legal marriage to the inmate.
You'll need to fill out NMCD's Visitor Application for Visiting Privileges, form CD-100201.1. This is the official application facilities use to approve or deny visiting privileges.
- ✓ Use original signatures (not missing or blank)
- ✓ Include all required dates
- ✓ Provide your Social Security number
- ✓ Provide your date of birth
- ✓ Complete any other required identifying fields on the form
- ✓ Double-check before mailing: if required information is missing (signatures, dates, SSN, DOB, etc.), you’ll have to resubmit a new application
- Complete CD-100201.1 - fill it out fully and make sure required fields aren’t missing.
- Mail the application to the facility visiting coordinator - NMCD requires visiting applications to be mailed directly to the facility’s visiting coordinator.
Once an inmate arrives at an NMCD facility, they'll receive written visiting procedures within 24 hours. That packet includes the facility's contact info, visiting days and hours, and local rules. One thing to know: if your loved one previously paroled and returned to custody, any prior visitor approvals are wiped out. Everyone has to re-apply.
Approval isn't permanent. NMCD requires you to resubmit the Visitor Application (CD-100201.1) every two years. Set a reminder once you're approved.
Getting approved on paper isn't the final step. Before your first visit, you'll need to read and sign the Visitor Statement of Understanding (CD-100201.A). Staff won't let you proceed until it's completed.
Warning: The Statement of Understanding explains that refusing a strip search can lead to a cancelled or suspended visit, and it also warns that bringing (or attempting to bring) contraband - like weapons, alcohol, drugs, or currency - into a facility is a New Mexico state law violation.
Expect a formal check-in when you arrive. All visitors must register upon entry, so plan on being documented before you reach the visiting area.
NMCD can conduct more intensive searches in certain situations. If staff have reasonable suspicion you're trying to bring contraband in, the Warden can order a thorough search. A strip search may be ordered if probable cause exists.
Note: If you refuse a strip search, NMCD policy warns that your visit can be cancelled or suspended.
NMCD sets statewide policy, but day-to-day details vary by facility. Each location gives inmates written visiting procedures within 24 hours of arrival - including contact info and visiting hours. If you're unsure what to do next, ask your loved one to share that packet so you're following the current rules.
At Grants County Correctional Facility (GCCF), visits are by appointment only. The facility publishes specific time slots by group: Wednesday (RHU only) 8:30–10:30 a.m.; Thursday (General Population) 8:30–10:30 a.m.; Friday (General Population) 8:30–10:30 a.m. and 12:30–2:30 p.m. Confirm the current appointment process and which slot applies to the person you're visiting.
GCCF audits visiting paperwork when an inmate arrives, screening forms as part of the file review. Make sure your application is complete and correctly signed. And remember: if your loved one previously paroled and returned to NMCD custody, old approvals don't carry over - everyone must re-apply.
