Sending Money to an Inmate at Grants NM Corrections: What You Need to Know
Sending money to someone incarcerated is straightforward once you know the rules. At Grants NM Corrections (NMCD), funds from the outside go through mailed money orders—not drop-offs, not cash.
At NMCD facilities, outside funds must be sent through the U.S. mail as a money order. There are a few narrow exceptions - approved vendor refunds or settlements from courts or detention centers - but for most families and friends, a money order sent by mail is the way to go.
Fill out the money order with the inmate's full name and their five-digit Corrections number. That name-and-number match is how staff verify it and credit the right account.
Before sending anything, confirm you're on the inmate's approved visitor list. NMCD requires this for mailed money from family or friends to be credited. If you're not on the list, the money order may be rejected.
Sending money as a gift? NMCD checks that your address on the money order matches the address on your visitor application. Mismatches can delay processing - or get the money order returned.
Don’t bring money to leave at the facility: Visitors aren’t permitted to leave money in any form at the facility. Use the approved mail process instead.
Red flag: Money orders from one payer to multiple unrelated inmates are treated as suspicious and can be referred to the Security Threat Intelligence Unit for investigation.
Double-check the mailing address before sending. Addresses vary by facility and can change if someone transfers. Not sure where to send it? NMCD Family Constituent Services can help: CDFamilySrvcs@cd.nm.gov, (505) 827-8710, or (505) 231-4762.
