The New York State Archives research room is at 222 Madison Avenue, Albany, NY 12230. Map your route before you leave - especially if you're traveling in specifically for Great Meadow-related records.

The research room is open Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It closes on New York State holidays, so double-check your date if you're planning around a long weekend.

Driving? Paid visitor parking is available in the Madison Avenue Lot, on the west side of the building. Access it from Madison Avenue - it's the closest option to the entrance.

Visits are by appointment only. To reserve a table, email archref@nysed.gov or call (518) 474-8955. Get your spot lined up before you travel.

Reminder: Wait for confirmation before heading in. You'll get an email or phone call once your appointment is set.

  1. Reach out several business days ahead - Call (518) 474-8955 (or email archref@nysed.gov) with the date you want so the Archives can reserve a table.
  2. Tell them what you want to use - Ask about reserving the specific materials you hope to see during your visit.
  3. Build in extra time for offsite items - If anything you need is stored offsite, a week’s notice is required to retrieve it.
  4. Wait for confirmation, then plan your trip - Once you get the confirming email or phone call, you can lock in your travel plans knowing you’re on the schedule.

What to Bring

  • A photo ID (you’ll be asked to show it)
  • A printed copy of your appointment confirmation (email or note from the phone call)
  • The Research Room Registration Form (be ready to complete items 1–11 and sign the declaration agreeing to abide by the rules)
  • Anything you need for a smooth check-in: you must sign in, complete the registration form, and agree to follow the research room rules
  • A plan for your personal items: you’ll need to place personal items in a locker

Note: Masks aren't required but are recommended. You'll sign in, show photo ID, and store personal items in a locker before entering the research room.

Some records are stored offsite and require a week's notice to retrieve. Request those items before booking travel - otherwise you might arrive before your materials do.
