How Many Visits Can You Have at GBCI? Understanding Visit Limits and Hours
Planning a visit gets a lot easier once you know the hours and limits. Here's what GBCI's materials say about in-person visits, how many you're allowed, and what to double-check for video visits.
GBCI’s posted in-person visiting room hours for Unrestricted status are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 2:15 PM to 5:45 PM.
GBCI allows up to six (6) in-person visits per Person In Our Care each week. There's also a daily cap: no more than two (2) in-person visits in a single day. That two-per-day limit is usually what affects planning the most if you're trying to fit multiple visits into a short window.
How many people can come with you depends on the Person In Our Care's visiting status. For all statuses except Unrestricted, GBCI limits each visit to two (2) visitors total - children included.
Unrestricted status allows larger groups. GBCI's materials say up to eight (8) visitors per visit, including children. That makes it easier for families to visit together instead of rotating people in and out.
In-person visits at GBCI are limited to 90 minutes. Plan your arrival and goodbyes around that window so you're not rushed at the end.
GBCI's visiting materials also cover video visits - each one is limited to 50 minutes.
A Wisconsin DOC ICS FAQ describes things differently: it says video visit time slots run approximately 25–26 minutes. That same FAQ mentions that for the first six months, each Person In Our Care may receive one free ICS video visit per week (if the institution's operations allow), with additional visits available at $2.50 each.
Note: GBCI materials and the DOC ICS FAQ don't match on video-visit length (50 minutes vs. ~25–26 minutes), and the FAQ includes free/paid guidance. Before scheduling, verify the current video time slot length and whether any fees apply.
GBCI's guidance on timing is specific: arrive no more than 15 minutes before visiting hours start. This keeps you from waiting around outside and helps check-in move smoothly for everyone.
- ✓ Bring a valid, government-issued photo ID if you’re age 16 or older (for example: state driver’s license, state ID, passport or visa, military ID, or tribal ID).
- ✓ Be ready to complete a DOC-176 “Request to Visit Offender” form if staff require it when you arrive at the lobby.
Heads up: If you can’t clear the metal detector within three attempts, you’ll be denied entry to the visiting room.
Before bringing a group, confirm the Person In Our Care's visit status. Unrestricted allows up to eight visitors (including children), but all other statuses cap it at two total - and showing up with too many people can derail the whole visit.
