What Happens When You Arrive: The Check-In Process at GBCI's Visiting Center
Your first visit can feel stressful when you don't know what to expect. Here's a walkthrough of the check-in process at Green Bay Correctional Institution (GBCI)—from when to arrive and what happens in the lobby to ID checks and clearing the metal detector.
Arrive close to the start time - GBCI asks that you show up no more than 15 minutes before visiting hours begin. This keeps the check-in line moving and avoids problems with waiting around on facility property.
Once you're on site, head straight to the Visiting Center Lobby to start check-in. Don't plan to wait in the parking lot - loitering on the grounds is prohibited.

In the Visiting Center Lobby, you'll fill out a
Note: You may be handling paperwork and identification at the same time - be ready to show your ID while staff processes your visit request.
ID Checks
- ✓ Valid state driver’s license
- ✓ Valid state ID / DMV photo ID
- ✓ Valid passport or visa
- ✓ Valid military ID
- ✓ Valid tribal photo ID
If you're 16 or older, bring a valid government-issued photo ID and keep it handy. You'll show it at the start of your visit, and staff may ask to see it again at any point. Your hand may also be stamped - this gets checked as you enter and leave secure areas, so don't wash it off after you clear the lobby.
- Go through the metal detector - the detector is sensitive to all types of metal.
- Adjust and try again if you alarm - you’re responsible for successfully clearing the metal detector.
- Use your attempts wisely - you must pass within three attempts, or your visit will be denied.
- Reduce metal before you step up - to speed things up, avoid excessive jewelry and clothing with metal (for example buckles, snaps, bib overalls, or wire undergarments).
Warning: If you can’t clear the metal detector within three attempts, you’ll be denied entry to the visiting room.
Staff are juggling several tasks at once during check-in - processing paperwork, verifying IDs, and controlling movement into secure areas. Be ready to complete the DOC-176A in the lobby and show your ID when asked. If your hand is stamped, treat it as part of your entry and exit verification.
If you're denied entry - one common reason is failing to clear the metal detector within three attempts - you'll need to leave facility property immediately. GBCI prohibits loitering in parking lots, including sitting in your car after being turned away.
