Visiting a Loved One in Greene's SHU or RRU: Rules, Hours, and the One-Per-Week Limit

These rules apply when your loved one is in Greene's Special Housing Unit (SHU) or Residential Rehabilitation Unit (RRU). Visiting happens on weekends, but here's the key detail: the facility's "week" runs Saturday through Friday - not Sunday through Saturday. That timing matters because it determines when you can schedule your next visit.

Plan around the facility's Saturday-to-Friday week. Only one non-legal visit is allowed during that window. Visit on a Saturday? That counts as your visit until the following Saturday starts a new period.

SHU/RRU visiting hours are Saturday evenings: 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. If you're used to daytime visits, this is a big shift - these visits happen in the evening, not during the day.

General population visiting works differently. On regular days, the facility allows one visit per incarcerated person per visiting day. Up to three visitors can come at once, plus one child under age five who must sit on an adult's lap. If you're coordinating with family, keep that visitor cap in mind when deciding who goes.

General population visiting hours run 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. You can arrive as early as 7:30 AM, but no later than 2:00 PM - miss that cutoff and you won't get in, even though the room stays open later. It's a completely different schedule from SHU/RRU's Saturday evening window.
