How to Apply for Visitation at a Virginia DOC Facility (Step-by-Step)
Visiting someone at a Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) facility starts with getting approved through the Central Visitation Unit (CVU). Once you understand the steps, the process is pretty straightforward.
You can't just show up and ask to visit. Every prospective visitor (adults and minors) must submit a visitor application online and be pre-approved by the Central Visitation Unit (CVU) before setting foot in a facility. Start by completing the Virginia DOC visitor application through the state's online visitation application portal. Then wait for CVU to review and approve your request before planning a trip.
Warning: Wait for written approval from CVU before you try to visit. If you show up before your application is processed, you will be turned away.
Adult visitors must authorize CVU to conduct a background investigation as part of the application. That authorization also covers any minors on the application, and criminal history checks are included for minor visitors over age 15. If you're applying with a teen, factor in extra time for that review so you're not scrambling right before your planned visit.
CVU generally reviews visitor applications within 45 days of receipt. That's a good baseline for planning, especially if you need to coordinate travel, childcare, or time off work.
Some applications take longer. CVU may need an additional 90 days for certain situations, including out-of-state visitors, former employees, or applicants with a criminal history. If any of those apply to you, plan for the extra time and hold off on booking a trip until you have written approval in hand.
Visitor approvals don't last forever. They expire three years from the approval date. Virginia DOC advises submitting a new application 90 days before expiration so your visitation privileges continue without a gap.
Common Mistakes
- ✓ Trying to schedule a visit before you receive written CVU approval
- ✓ Showing up at the facility before your application is processed
- ✓ Arriving to visit without scheduling the visit first (even if you already applied)
Once CVU approves your application, there's one more step. You need to register in the GTL Visitation Scheduler, and all visits must be booked through that system. Don't assume walk-ins are allowed. Set up your account, then schedule your visit there.
