What ID and Documents to Bring for an In-Person Virginia DOC Visit
A Virginia DOC visit goes a lot smoother when you show up with the right ID and know what to expect at the front desk. Use the sections below as a quick prep guide before you travel.
Every adult visitor (and every emancipated minor) must present a valid government-issued photo ID at each in-person Virginia DOC visit. A driver's license, state ID card, military ID, or passport all work. If you're an emancipated minor, the same photo ID requirement applies to you as it does to adult visitors.
At check-in, staff will scan your physical ID into the VACORIS system. They'll then hold your ID in a secured location for the duration of your visit. In some cases you'll get a visitor pass in exchange, and your ID is returned when the visit is over.
For visitors under 18, the key distinction is whether they are emancipated. Emancipated minors need a valid government-issued photo ID every time they visit, just like adults. A driver's license, state ID, military ID, or passport will meet the requirement.
If you're the adult bringing a minor along, your ID goes through the same process as everyone else's. Staff will scan it into VACORIS and hold it in a secured location until the visit ends. You may receive a visitor pass while your ID is being held.
- Arrive one hour early - Plan to be at the facility one hour before your scheduled in-person visit so there is enough time for security screening.

Virginia DOC provides reasonable accommodations during visitation for visitors with disabilities, including mobility impairments. If you'll need an accommodation, contact the facility ahead of time so everything can be arranged before you arrive.
Note: If you wear a scarf or veil as a religious face covering, staff may require you to move it and, when necessary, remove it briefly so they can properly identify you.
Schedules and procedures can vary from one institution to the next, and they do change. Before you travel, contact the specific facility to confirm the current requirements for admission and visitation.
