Your Calls Are Being Recorded: What Families Should Know About Phone Monitoring at Greenville County Detention Center
Talking with someone at Greenville County Detention Center? Assume the call isn't private. Here's how monitoring works, when phones are available, and who to call when something goes wrong.
All inmate telephone calls at Greenville County Detention Center are subject to recording and monitoring. Plan your conversations with that in mind, especially if you’re discussing anything sensitive.
Before the call connects, both parties hear an automated message warning that the call may be recorded and monitored. That's your cue to keep things appropriate - don't share anything you wouldn't want replayed later.
Note: Attorney calls can be excluded from monitoring, but only if the attorney submits the Request for Confidential Inmate Phone Call Form listing the phone numbers to exclude.
General population inmates can use the phones daily from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. That said, service may pause during head counts, meals, or emergencies. Phone access is a privilege - the facility can restrict it for safety and security reasons.
- ✓ Inmate head counts
- ✓ Meal service
- ✓ Institutional emergencies
- ✓ Other incidents that require phone service to be interrupted
- ✓ Privilege changes (phone access can be removed for safety and security)
Having technical problems? Dropped calls, billing issues, improper charges, or need to block your number from receiving calls? Contact Securus Technologies at 1-800-844-6591. The Detention Center doesn't handle phone system finances - billing and account questions go through Securus.
- Call Securus Technologies - Reach support at 1-800-844-6591 and explain the issue (dropped calls, charges, billing, technical problems).
- Ask for the specific fix you need - For example, request help with improper charges/billing or ask to have your number blocked from receiving direct calls.
- Escalate if it isn’t resolved through Securus - Issues that can’t be properly addressed through Securus may be reported to the Detention Center for follow up; keep any details from your Securus contact so you can share them.
The facility recognizes that inmates need to speak privately with their attorneys. To make that happen, attorneys must complete a Request for Confidential Inmate Phone Call Form listing the phone numbers to exclude from monitoring and recording.
Submit the form by fax to (864) 467-2462 or email it to mstowers@greenvillecounty.org. Processing happens at Greenville County Detention Center, 20 McGee St.
Reminder: The form needs the attorney’s phone numbers that should be excluded from monitoring/recording. Submit it by fax (864) 467-2462 or email mstowers@greenvillecounty.org.
