Why You Can’t Receive a Collect Call to Your Cell — and How to Set Up Securus to Get Calls from Greenville County Detention Center

If you're waiting on a call from someone at Greenville County Detention Center and keep missing it on your cell, the issue is usually billing setup, not your phone. Here's why collect calls to cell phones get blocked, and what to do instead so you can actually receive calls.

Greenville County Detention Center does not allow collect calls to cell phones. If you want to receive calls on a cell number, you need to set up a Securus account ahead of time and accept financial responsibility so the call can actually connect when it comes through. Billing runs through Securus, not the detention center. So most "why won't this call go through?" problems come down to something on the Securus side (account setup, funding, or call acceptance). Jail staff can't fix it for you.

Greenville County Detention Center uses Securus Technologies Inc. for inmate telephone service. When your loved one calls out, the connection and billing go through Securus.

There are two basic ways calls get paid for. If the inmate has funds in their inmate account, they can place calls that are free to you as the receiver. You still have to accept the call for it to connect, though. The other option: you set up a prepaid account through Securus to accept calls from inmates at the detention center. This is the usual route when you're trying to receive calls on a cell phone, since collect calls to cells are blocked.

Note: The detention center doesn't handle telephone billing or payments. If you need to add money, fix charges, or troubleshoot call problems, you'll work directly with Securus.

  1. Decide how you want calls paid - Either the inmate uses funds in their inmate account (calls can be free to you, but you still must accept), or you set up a Securus pre-paid account so you can receive calls.
  2. Set up your Securus account for your cell number - Because collect calls to cell phones are not allowed from this facility, you will want your cellular number tied to an account that can accept and pay for the calls.
  3. Fund the account if needed - Add money or set up pre-paid acceptance so calls do not fail due to billing.
  4. Answer and accept when the call comes in - Calls that require acceptance will not connect until you accept them.
  5. Test and adjust early - Do this setup before you are expecting an important call, so you are not scrambling after missed attempts.

You can set up Securus service by calling 1.800.844.6591 or through the Securus website for phone services. Either option will get your cell number registered so you can receive calls from Greenville County Detention Center.

Tip: If the inmate has funds in their inmate account, they can place calls that are free to you. The call still has to be accepted to connect, though. For cell phones, having your Securus account set up ahead of time helps prevent missed calls.

General population inmates typically have phone access daily from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. Even during those hours, calls can get interrupted for head counts, meal service, emergencies, or other incidents where the facility needs to pause phone services. Phone access is a privilege, and it can be removed for safety and security reasons. If calls suddenly stop or become inconsistent, it may not be a problem with your account at all.
