Before Your First Visit to Grimes County Jail: What to Bring and What to Leave Behind

Your first visit to Grimes County Jail will go smoothly if you show up prepared. Keep what you bring (and wear) simple - staff can search visitors if they have probable cause to believe someone is carrying contraband or a weapon. Refuse a search, and you'll be removed immediately.

Before making the trip, confirm you're on the inmate's approved visitation list. Grimes County Jail caps each list at five names, so not everyone who wants to visit will be able to.

If you’re bringing kids, plan for hands-on supervision the whole time. Small children can’t be left unattended anywhere in the facility, including during check-in.

ID and Age Rules

  • Bring a valid state ID for check-in.
  • If you’re age 15 or older, you must present a valid state driver’s license or identification card.
  1. Check in at the visitation desk - You’ll sign in and tell staff who you’re visiting.
  2. Show your valid state ID - Have it out and ready so check-in doesn’t stall.
  3. Be prepared for a search if staff has probable cause - If you refuse to be searched, you’ll be immediately removed from the facility.

Prohibited Items

  • Leave cell phones, purses, cameras, and similar items in your vehicle; they are not allowed in the visitation room.
  • Do not give any articles to an inmate.
  • Do not leave personal clothing for an inmate.
  • Do not leave funds for an inmate.

Reminder: Refuse a search when staff has probable cause, and you'll be removed immediately. Don't try to pass or leave items - including clothing or money - for an inmate during visitation.
