What Gets Your Mail Rejected at Guadalupe County Jail (And Why Senders Could Face Charges)

Checklist Prohibited Items

  • Stickers (including seals and decorative sticker add-ons)
  • Glitter (any kind of “sparkly” decoration)
  • Lipstick (including lipstick marks/kisses on paper or envelopes)
  • Perfume or cologne (scented letters, sprayed paper, scented envelopes)
  • Bodily fluids (or anything that appears to be a biological substance)

Note: Some items aren't just prohibited - they're treated as contraband. The jail will confiscate them and notify the inmate in writing. Serious violations (like bodily fluids or contaminated mail) can lead to criminal charges against the sender.

Mail containing prohibited add-ons - stickers, glitter, lipstick, perfume/cologne, or bodily fluids - gets refused and returned. If staff find contraband, they'll confiscate it and notify the inmate in writing using a Confiscated Inmate Property Form. The form explains what was removed and why.

Warning: Mailing bodily fluids or anything that poses a contamination risk (lipstick, perfume/cologne) can do more than get your letter rejected. The sender could face criminal charges.

Newspapers must come through a subscription sent directly to 2615 N Guadalupe St, Seguin, TX 78155. You can't just drop a loose issue in the mail - set up a subscription so it arrives the way the jail requires.

Newspapers older than seven days get thrown out. The jail won't hold them indefinitely for inmates to collect later.

How to Reduce Rejection

  • Put your full name and complete return address on the envelope
  • Address the mail using the inmate’s full booking name (the name used when they were booked into the jail)
  • Include the inmate’s SO#
  1. Keep it plain - Use a standard envelope and plain paper without decorations.
  2. Skip stickers and glitter - Even “small” extras can get the entire piece of mail refused and returned.
  3. Don’t add lipstick or scents - Avoid lipstick marks and anything sprayed with perfume/cologne.
  4. Never include bodily fluids (or anything like it) - It can be treated as contraband and can create legal risk for the sender.

Quick double-check: Any contraband gets confiscated, and the inmate receives written notice on a Confiscated Inmate Property Form. Give your letter a final review before sealing it.
