Guilford County mail & packages: what happens to letters, how to address them, and how to send books
Guilford County uses a scanned-mail process for regular letters, and the address you use matters. Here's how to send non-legal mail, where legal mail must go, what formats get rejected, and how to send books the right way.
Regular (non-legal) mail in Guilford County doesn't get handed over as a physical envelope. Letters that meet facility requirements are scanned within 24 hours of receipt, then the original paper is destroyed. After scanning, staff reviews the digital version. Once it clears, it's made available on the inmate's tablet. They'll see a scanned copy, not the original letter or card you sent.
If your loved one is housed at the Greensboro Detention Center, all non-legal (regular) mail must go to the mail processing center. Use this format: Guilford County Detention - Greensboro Inmate Name Inmate ID Number Facility ID 5083 PO Box 18247 Greensboro, NC 27419 Write everything clearly. The facility also requires a complete, legible return address with your first and last name. Without it, your mail won't be scanned.
- ✓ Inmate’s full name
- ✓ Inmate ID number
- ✓ Facility ID 5083
- ✓ No more than 10 pages per envelope
- ✓ Pages no larger than 8.5" x 11"
Legal (privileged) mail must go directly to the facility, not the mail processing center. Address it to the inmate's full name and ID number at: 201 S. Edgeworth St. Greensboro, NC 27401
For inmates at the High Point facility, legal (privileged) mail goes directly to that location. Include the inmate's full name and ID number: 507 E. Green Drive High Point, NC 27260
Keep mail simple and easy to scan. Guilford County limits you to 10 pages per envelope, and each page must be 8.5" x 11" or smaller. Photos are allowed, but not polaroids. Stick to standard printed photos instead.
Prohibited Items
- ✓ Mail or greeting cards with glitter, glue, tape, 3D elements, or electronic components (lights, music, animation)
- ✓ Magazines, books, or packages sent to the mail processing center
- ✓ Originals of important documents (birth certificates, driver’s licenses, Social Security cards, Green Cards, etc.)
Heads up: Books, magazines, and packages sent to the mail processing center will be rejected. Also avoid sending original documents or anything irreplaceable. Originals are not returned.
You can send books, but not the way most people expect. Guilford County only accepts books mailed directly from a publisher or distributor. Order through a retailer that ships directly, like Amazon, Walmart, or Barnes & Noble. Don't mail a book yourself, and don't send it to the mail processing center.
- Email the right contact: Send your request to ygeorge@guilfordcountync.gov (High Point) or kclark0@guilfordcountync.gov (Greensboro).
- Include the required details: Inmate’s full name, facility name (Greensboro or High Point), inmate ID number (not a commissary PIN), and the email address where you want the copies sent.
