Why Your VADOC Visitor Application Expires: How to Renew Without Losing Privileges

2 min read Verified from official sources

VADOC visitor applications expire three years after the approval date, even if you've been visiting regularly the entire time. To keep visiting without a gap, submit a new application before that three-year mark hits.

Once you submit your application (or renewal), VADOC sends status updates to the email address on your form. Use one you actually check. Keep an eye on it while you wait so you don't miss updates about where things stand.

Timing

  • Submit your new visitor application online at least 45 days before your current approval expires if you live in Virginia.
  • Plan around processing time. VADOC says processing takes about 45 days for Virginia residents, so waiting until the last minute can create a gap in your visiting privileges.
  • Submit your new visitor application online at least 90 days before your current approval expires if you live out of state.
  • Give yourself that extra runway because processing takes about 90 days for out-of-state residents.

Block out time to finish the online renewal in one sitting. VADOC estimates it takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and there's no way to save a draft. If you get interrupted or close the page, expect to start over from scratch.

Timing matters here. You can't schedule a visit until your application is approved, and scheduling happens through VADOC's online system. If your current approval expires while your renewal is still processing, you could end up stuck in limbo with no way to book a visit.

  1. Submit a new application right away - If you are close to expiration (or already past it), do not wait. Get your renewal back in the system as soon as you can.
  2. Plan around the processing window - VADOC estimates about 45 days for Virginia residents and about 90 days for out-of-state residents, so build that wait time into your expectations.
  3. Watch your email for updates - While you are waiting, keep checking the email you used on the application so you see status updates quickly.

Note: If you're applying for a minor to visit, their application must be attached to an adult visitor's application. Submitting the minor's paperwork separately can slow everything down.
