Understanding Hamilton Unit's 10-Person Visitor List: Who Can Be Added and When

Trying to get on someone's visitation list at Hamilton Unit? Two rules drive almost everything: there's a 10-name maximum, and changes to that list follow a set timeline.

Each inmate at Hamilton Unit can have a maximum of 10 names on their approved Visitors List. That's the total, not 10 per category. If the list is already full, someone has to come off before a new person can be added. The Visitors List is the official roster tied to visitation, reflecting the specific people the inmate wants to see during authorized visiting hours.

  • Have the inmate’s TDCJ or SID number ready, and make sure it is exactly 8 digits.
  • If you do not know the 8-digit number, look it up using the TDCJ Offender Search before you try to add the inmate to your visitor profile.

Hamilton Unit is classified as an institutional setting, and that matters for timing. For institutional inmates (including those at Hamilton Unit), adding or deleting names on the Visitors List counts as a "Visitors List change." These changes can only be made once every six months. If you're trying to get added and the timing isn't lining up, this six-month window is usually the reason.

Not every TDCJ setting uses the same schedule. For state jail, Intermediate Sanction Facility (ISF), and Substance Abuse Felony Punishment (SAFP) inmates, Visitors List changes (adding or deleting names) can be made once every 60 days. If your loved one transfers between facility types, the change window shifts with them.

  1. Submit a Relationship Request in the visitation system. This is the request to be recognized as a verified visitor for that inmate.
  2. Watch for the pending status on your home page. Until TDCJ staff approve it, your request stays in the “Relation Requests Pending Approval” section.
  3. Wait for staff confirmation, then check what scheduling option appears. After the relationship is confirmed by TDCJ staff, you may see a “Schedule Visit” button by the inmate’s name. In some cases, that option may be replaced with “Call Unit,” which means you will need to schedule by phone instead of online.

Note: A Relationship Request isn't active until TDCJ staff approve it. Once approved, you may be able to schedule online through "Schedule Visit," or you may be told to "Call Unit" to schedule by phone.
