What to Wear (and What Not to Wear) When Visiting Harford County Detention Center

The baseline rule at Harford County Detention Center is straightforward: all visitors, including children, must wear clothing that covers from the neck to the kneecaps. Fall short of that standard and you'll be denied entry. Plan your outfit ahead of time - especially if you're bringing a child who might be dressed for the weather rather than visitation rules.

Prohibited Clothing

  • Tube tops
  • Tank tops
  • Halter tops
  • Spaghetti straps
  • Tops or dresses with revealing necklines
  • Clothing that shows exposed shoulders
  • Clothing that shows your back
  • Clothing that shows your midriff
  • Clothing that shows your sides
  • Clothing that shows excessive cleavage or bust

Watch the fit: Form-fitting garments - leotards, spandex, leggings, jeggings - aren't allowed.

Bottoms must be knee-length. Shorts, skirts, and dresses need to reach the knee, and any slit can't go higher than that.

The facility also restricts what's displayed on clothing. Anything with profanity, obscene images, or messaging promoting drugs, alcohol, violence, or gangs isn't permitted. Stick with plain, neutral graphics - or skip graphics entirely - to avoid problems at check-in.

Reminder: If you don’t follow the dress code, the facility will deny the visit.

Belongings and Device Policy

  • Handbags
  • Purses
  • Briefcases

Plan for outerwear too. Coats, jackets, and hoodies can't be worn into the visitation area. If you arrive wearing one, you'll need to stash it in a locker before going in.

  1. Silence your phone and smartwatch before you enter - they must be silenced when entering the Detention Center.
  2. Put them in a locker - phones and smartwatches must be placed in a locker, and if your phone rings while it’s in the locker, your visit will be terminated.
