What to Wear (and What Not to Wear) When Visiting Harford County Detention Center

Dress code is one of the easiest ways to get turned away at the door. Use this checklist so you can dress right for your Harford County Detention Center visit, no surprises.

Harford County Detention Center expects visitors to dress as they would for a professional setting where children are present. The simplest rule: all visitors, including kids, must wear clothing that covers from the neck to the kneecaps.

That means your outfit should fully cover your shoulders, back, midriff, and sides, with no excessive cleavage or bust showing. Shorts, skirts, and dresses need to reach the knee. Any slit in a skirt or dress can be no higher than the knee. Tops or dresses with revealing necklines or excessive splits are not allowed.

Prohibited Clothing

  • Tube tops
  • Tank tops
  • Halter tops
  • Spaghetti straps
  • See-through or sheer clothing
  • Form-fitting clothes such as leotards, spandex, leggings, and jeggings

Skip anything with wording or graphics that could cause problems at the door. Clothing displaying profanity, obscene images, or promoting drugs, alcohol, violence, or gangs is not permitted.

Note: When in doubt, go conservative: non-revealing, non-sheer, not form-fitting, and covered from neck to kneecap.

Plan to arrive without extra carry-in items. Handbags, purses, and briefcases are not allowed inside Harford County Detention Center. Coats, jackets, and hoodies can't stay with you during the visit either. If you wear one in, you'll need to place it in a locker right when you arrive.

  1. Silence your phone and smartwatch before you enter - they must be silenced when entering the detention center.
  2. Put them in a locker - phones and smartwatches must be placed in a locker.
  3. Make sure your phone will not ring - if it rings while it is in the locker, your visit will be terminated.
  • Lighters
  • Cigarettes
  • Vape material of any kind

Break the dress code and your visit will be denied. It's that simple.

Quick Checklist

  • Bring a valid photo ID issued by a federal, state, or local government entity
  • Leave handbags, purses, and briefcases at home (they are not allowed inside)
  • Do not bring lighters, cigarettes, or vape material of any kind

Tip: Silence your cell phone and smartwatch, then put them in a locker. Wearing a coat, jacket, or hoodie? Place it in a locker right when you arrive.
