Important: Your Original Letters Will Be Destroyed — What Haysi's Mail Scanning System Means for You
When you send a letter to someone at Haysi, they won't receive the actual paper. Instead, it gets scanned into an electronic system—and the original is destroyed.
To send regular postal mail (letters, postcards, greeting cards) to someone at Haysi Jail, address it to Smart Communications at P.O. Box 9112, Seminole, FL 33775. Include the inmate's name and ID number on the outside of the envelope. Smart Communications scans the mail so your loved one can view it electronically on the jail's kiosk or tablet. Here's what you need to know: the original paper you sent gets destroyed after processing. You won't get it back.
Heads up: If the envelope or postcard doesn’t clearly include the inmate’s name and ID number, it will be returned to you.
Legal mail and money orders work differently - don't send them through Smart Communications. Mail those directly to the facility: INMATE NAME, P.O. Box 535, Haysi, VA 24256. Mark legal correspondence clearly as "legal mail" so it's handled properly.
Anything scanned through the regular mail system - photos, copies of IDs, certificates - gets stored electronically for a limited time. The digital copy stays in the system for 30 days, then it's deleted. Keep this in mind if you're sending something your loved one might want to reference later.
Remember: Both copies have an expiration date. The scanned version is deleted after 30 days, and the original paper is destroyed right after processing.

- ✓ Don’t mail original, irreplaceable documents (birth certificates, marriage certificates, Social Security cards, or other one-of-a-kind paperwork) - originals are destroyed after processing.
- ✓ Don’t mail original photos you can’t replace - originals are destroyed after processing.
- ✓ If you need to send a document or photo, send a copy you can live without - it will be scanned, and the electronic version is destroyed after 30 days.
Want more control over your communication? Skip postal mail for anything sensitive and use electronic messaging through Smart Communications instead. You'll need a prepaid account, which you can set up at www.smartinmate.com or by calling 1-888-253-5178. Each message costs 50 credits (about $0.50). It adds up, but you get a reliable way to stay in touch without risking original documents in the mail.
Don’t route these through Smart Communications: Legal mail and money orders must be mailed to INMATE NAME, P.O. Box 535, Haysi, VA 24256, and legal mail should be clearly marked.
