Call Herlong FCI before you travel. The Warden can restrict or cancel visiting, and inmates in special housing may have a modified schedule. Federal law guarantees at least four hours of visiting time per month, but the Warden can limit visit length or the number of visitors for safety reasons or to prevent overcrowding. You consent to searches by entering or attempting to enter Bureau grounds. Refuse a search, and you can be denied entry. Review the Notification to Visitor form for prohibited objects and medication instructions (any medications you bring must be listed and left at the entry area). To get approved, proposed visitors must submit a visitor questionnaire and release form. False statements can bring criminal penalties under 18 U.S.C. § 1001. Transportation is not reimbursed, so plan your own travel.

Phone calls at Herlong FCI are generally paid by the inmate. Third-party or alternative payment arrangements are not permitted. Calls are monitored, though attorney calls may be unmonitored. For electronic contact, inmates use TRULINCS messaging, funded through the Inmate Trust Fund. Messages are text-only, screened or monitored, limited to 13,000 characters, and attachments are not accepted. Before you try to message or use video-related services, set up an account on the department's communications platform (web or mobile) and register for the services you need so you can add funds when required. Providers and platforms can change, so confirm which vendor Herlong currently supports before you start.

Sending money to someone at FCI Herlong is straightforward once you use the right channel. Do not mail funds to the facility address. Any mailed deposits must go to the designated processing center in Des Moines, Iowa. For electronic deposits, the facility accepts MoneyGram ExpressPayment. Follow the vendor's instructions carefully: enter the inmate's eight-digit register number immediately followed by their last name, and use Receive Code 7932. Money you send goes into the inmate's commissary (trust) account for purchases and other authorized deductions. Double-check the inmate's full name and ID before submitting. Commissary offerings have also been updated, including healthier food options and standardized female and transgender items for sale or by special purpose order.
