Before your first visit to HighTower Unit: what to bring and what to leave behind
Your first visit goes smoother when you show up with the right ID and only what TDCJ allows past the gate. Here's a quick bring/leave checklist before you head to HighTower Unit.
Bring a current, government-issued photo ID if you're 18 or older. Staff check it at sign-in to confirm you're on the approved visitor list. Expired or unofficial IDs? They'll stop your visit before it starts.
At least one of your IDs needs to show a current physical address. The exception: if you're a victim of family violence certified by the Texas attorney general for address protection, you're not required to show an address on your ID.
Leave your wallet's cash at home. TDCJ only allows coins for visits - $35 max. Bring paper bills and you'll likely be sent back to your car before you can continue.
Leave your cell phone in the car. It's not allowed inside the secure perimeter, and bringing it will get you turned back at the gate.
Quick
- ✓ Current, official government-issued photo ID if you’re 18+
- ✓ At least one ID that shows a current physical address (unless you qualify for the address-protection exception)
- ✓ Coins only, totaling $35 or less (no bills)
- ✓ Cell phone left outside the secure perimeter
Note: If you’re a victim of family violence and have been certified by the Texas attorney general for address protection, TDCJ makes an exception to the “current physical address” ID requirement.
