Before You Drive to Hutchison State Jail: Pre-Visit Checklist

Call the unit before you hit the road. Online visitation info isn't updated in real time - it refreshes once daily on weekdays and multiple times on visitation days - so a quick call can prevent surprises. Ask two things: Is your loved one currently assigned to Hutchison State Jail? Do they have visitation privileges right now? Also confirm the day's schedule and whether visits have been canceled. Even an eligible inmate can't receive visitors if the unit has shut down visitation for the day.

  • Is the inmate currently assigned to Hutchison State Jail?
  • Is the inmate currently eligible for visitation (visitation privileges in place)?
  • Is visitation scheduled for the day you plan to come?
  • Has visitation been canceled for any reason (including unit-wide cancellations)?
  • Are there any special requirements or last-minute changes you should know about before you leave?

Bring a current, government-issued photo ID. If you're 18 or older, you won't get in without one. At least one of your ID documents needs to show your current physical address - staff check this as part of the identity verification process.

Note: Exceptions to the “current physical address” requirement may be made for victims of family violence who have been certified by the attorney general to have address protection.

Do a quick pocket-and-bag check before leaving your car. Cash isn't allowed inside except for coins, and even then you're limited to $35. Cell phones can't go past the secure perimeter - leave yours locked in your vehicle so you don't get stopped at the gate.

  • Leave your cell phone behind (do not take it inside the secure perimeter).
  • Bring no cash other than coins, and keep coins to $35 or less.
  • Do a final check of pockets and bags before you walk up, so you’re not carrying anything you’ll have to discard or take back to the car.

Keep the "one visit per weekend" rule in mind. Each inmate can only receive one visit per weekend. If multiple people are on your loved one's Visitors List, coordinate ahead of time so nobody drives out only to get turned away as the second visitor that weekend.
