Sending Books, Magazines, and Photos to Residents at Hutchinson Correctional Facility

Mail gets rejected for two main reasons: the item isn't allowed, or the resident has hit their possession limit. Here's what KDOC allows for books, magazines, letters, and photos—plus two items you should never send.

Sending Books, Magazines, and Photos to Residents at Hutchinson Correctional Facility

Residents at Hutchinson Correctional Facility can keep up to 12 books in their cell. If they're already at that limit, something has to go before anything new can stay.

The magazine limit is 10 per resident. Keep that cap in mind when sending subscriptions or single issues - going over can hold up your mail.

Residents can keep up to 10 personal letters at a time. If your loved one saves letters, they may need to clear space before new ones can stay.

The photo limit is 50, and each one must be 8x10 inches or smaller. Oversize prints or exceeding the count will get photos rejected or returned.

Don’t mail stamps to a resident. Hutchinson Correctional Facility does not allow residents to receive stamps through the mail.

Not allowed: Polaroid photographs aren’t accepted. Send standard printed photos instead.

How to Avoid Mistakes

  • Print photos at 8x10 inches or smaller
  • Keep the total number of photos the resident has at 50 or fewer
  • Keep the resident’s in-cell book count at 12 or fewer
  • Keep magazine count at 10 or fewer

Ordering books or magazines through a well-known publisher or retailer - rather than packing items yourself - tends to cause fewer problems. Before placing a big order, confirm the current mailing rules so your shipment doesn't get turned away.

Check the latest mail rules before sending anything unusual - especially bulk book or magazine orders, photo prints, or items from a new seller. Policies change, and confirming what the facility accepts right now is the safest move.
