Tablet messaging runs through ViaPath (GettingOut). You'll need to create a ViaPath account and add money before you can send anything. The minimum deposit is $10. Once your account has funds, message costs come out of your ViaPath balance.

Kansas Department of Corrections lists "Friends and Family" pricing for ViaPath: $0.25 per electronic message, $0.25 per photo, and $1.75 for a 30-second video attachment. Rates can change, so confirm current pricing in your ViaPath account or with KDOC before loading a large balance.

Note: ViaPath funds cover messaging and media only, not a resident's trust account. If you want to deposit spending money for commissary, that goes through Access Corrections. Double-check you're using the right service before you pay.

Phone contact works differently. Residents can make collect or prepaid calls, but they cannot receive incoming calls. The telephone provider is ICS Corrections, Inc. You can set up a prepaid account through ICS to make accepting calls easier. One thing to know: resident phone calls (except attorney calls) may be monitored and recorded under KAR 44-2-102(c).

Steps to Follow

  1. Send an electronic message - Write your message in ViaPath/GettingOut and send it to your loved one. KDOC lists the Friend and Family rate as $0.25 per message.
  2. Attach a photo (optional) - If you add a photo, it is deducted from your ViaPath balance. KDOC lists $0.25 per photo.
  3. Attach a short video (optional) - ViaPath allows a 30-second video message attachment. KDOC lists $1.75 per 30-second video.
  • Use Access Corrections for electronic deposits to a resident’s trust account.
  • Do not use ViaPath for trust deposits. ViaPath is for messaging and media funds.
  • If you want to accept prepaid calls, set up an account with ICS Corrections, Inc.
  • Use ICS customer service for called parties at 1-888-506-8407 to establish a prepaid account.

What to Verify

  • Confirm the current ViaPath “Friends and Family” item pricing (messages, photos, and 30-second video attachments) before sending or depositing funds.
  • For GettingOut/ViaPath account questions, call ViaPath Support at 866-516-0115.
  • For KDOC help with tablet or messaging issues, call 785-746-7542 and leave a detailed message.
  • You can also email KDOC_Facility_Management@ks.gov.

Assume phone calls can be monitored or recorded unless the call is to an attorney. KDOC references KAR 44-2-102(c) for this rule. If you need clarity on what counts as a protected legal call or how to set one up, ask the facility or KDOC before sharing sensitive information over the phone.
