Start by reading the official Visiting Rules for Residents and Visitors for IMSI. These rules cover what you can wear, how you're expected to behave, and what's prohibited - so you won't get turned away at the door after making the trip.

Note: Reading the Visiting Rules for Residents and Visitors isn't optional. It's the baseline for getting approved and making it through check-in.

You'll need to complete a visiting application and pass a background check before you can visit anyone at IMSI. Want the fastest route? IDOC recommends the online Visiting Application - it's the quickest way to get your information processed.

  1. Start the Visiting Application - Use the online Visiting Application if you can, since it’s recommended for fastest service.
  2. Provide the information needed for the background check - Your application is part of the approval process, and all potential visitors must complete the background check requirement.
  3. Wait for approval before you plan the trip - Don’t assume you’re cleared to visit until your application and background check have been accepted.

Tip: Submit the online Visiting Application for the fastest processing.

Adults (18 and older) use the Adult Visiting Application. That's the standard form IMSI uses to review and approve visitors.

Bringing a minor (17 or younger)? The process is different. You'll submit a Minor Visiting Application along with supporting documents: a court order granting legal guardianship (or a Power of Attorney Delegating Limited Powers for Visitation) and a certified copy of the minor's birth certificate.

Give yourself extra time. Every visitor must complete the application and background check first, so submit well before any travel plans - especially if you're juggling work, childcare, or a long drive.

Right before you go, double-check the IMSI visiting schedule. Schedules can shift due to emergencies, and a quick confirmation helps you avoid showing up on a day visits aren't happening.

Warning: IMSI schedules can change due to emergencies - confirm as close to your travel day as possible.
