Visitation

What to Know Before Your First Visit to Idaho Maximum Security Institution (IMSI)

Before you plan a trip to Idaho Maximum Security Institution (IMSI), start with the basics. Read the IDOC "Visiting Rules for Residents and Visitors," then complete the visiting application process. IMSI requires every potential visitor to submit an application and pass a background check before a visit is approved. This takes time, so don't wait until the week you're hoping to go. The rules and application are both available through the IDOC Visiting Application page. Taking a few minutes to read the rules first helps you fill everything out correctly on the first try.

Want the quickest turnaround? Use the online Visiting Application. IDOC specifically notes that online submission is the fastest service option, and it's also where you'll find the Visiting Application - Adult form.

Adult Requirements

  • Read the IDOC “Visiting Rules for Residents and Visitors” before you apply.
  • Complete the required background check as part of the visiting approval process.
  • Submit the Visiting Application - Adult (required for applicants age 18 or older).

Minors Documents

  • Submit a Visiting Application - Adult for the parent or guardian who will be visiting.
  • Submit a separate Visiting Application - Minor for the child.
  • Include a copy of the court order granting legal guardianship, or a Power of Attorney Delegating Limited Powers for Visitation.
  • Include a certified copy of the minor’s birth certificate.
  • Remember that visitors still must complete the IDOC visiting application process, including the background check requirement.

Note: For minor visits, IDOC requires a certified birth certificate plus the correct legal document showing guardianship or a valid power of attorney for visitation.

Don't assume the visiting schedule stays the same every week. IMSI schedules can change due to emergency situations. Check shortly before you travel so you don't show up on a day when visits have been modified or canceled.

Expect strict security rules, especially around contraband. Under Idaho Code 18-5210, knowingly introducing or possessing contraband in a correctional facility is a crime. The law lists examples including tobacco, cell phones or telecommunications equipment, controlled or illegal substances, firearms or other dangerous weapons, ammunition or explosives, and escape tools or devices. Penalties can reach up to 5 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000. Keep your visit simple and don't bring anything that could be considered prohibited.

Quick Checklist

  • Read the “Visiting Rules for Residents and Visitors” before doing anything else.
  • Submit a visiting application and complete the required background check before you try to schedule a visit.
  • Use the online Visiting Application for fastest service.
  • If you are 18 or older, submit the Visiting Application - Adult.
  • If you are bringing a minor, submit both applications (Adult for the parent/guardian and Minor for the child) and gather the required documents (certified birth certificate plus guardianship court order or a power of attorney for visitation).
  • Check the IMSI visiting schedule shortly before you travel, because it can change due to emergencies.
