Video Visits for Indiana Creek: At-Home vs AFOI Visitor Centers and Eligibility Rules

Want to video visit someone at Indiana Creek? You have two options: at-home visits using your own device, or visits at an AFOI visitor center. Which one works for you depends on your tech setup and whether your loved one qualifies under VADOC rules.

Video Visits for Indiana Creek: At-Home vs AFOI Visitor Centers and Eligibility Rules

VADOC offers at-home video visitation - you connect from a home computer, tablet, or Android smartphone. If you have the device and a stable internet connection, this is usually the easiest option. No travel required.

The other option is visiting through an AFOI (Assisting Families of Inmates) visitor center. These are designed for people without the right technology at home - or for situations where an inmate doesn't qualify for at-home video visits. For Indiana Creek families, a visitor center session can be a practical workaround when at-home isn't available.

AFOI runs multiple visitor center locations across Virginia. Need help figuring out where to go? Contact the Richmond main office: Assisting Families of Inmates, 220 Hull Street, Suite 100, Richmond, VA 23224, phone 804-643-2401.

Eligibility for video visits depends on your loved one's security level. Under VADOC rules, inmates at security levels W, 1, 2, or 3 can do video visits without restrictions.

Inmates at security levels 4 and 5 face a waiting period: they must go six months without an infraction to qualify. If your loved one is level 4 or 5 and video visits aren't available yet, this six-month rule is usually why.

Note: If your loved one is at Initial Reception, they are not eligible for video visits under VADOC OP 851.1 Attachment 4.

  1. Try scheduling in the ViaPath mobile app - this is the first place many people start.
  2. Use the ViaPath website on a laptop or desktop if the app won’t schedule - VADOC encourages visitors who hit app issues to schedule through the website from a computer until the problem is resolved.

  • You have a home computer, tablet, or Android smartphone and want the simplest setup (at-home video visitation).
  • Your loved one is eligible for video visits (security levels W–3 have no restrictions; levels 4–5 require six months infraction-free; Initial Reception is not eligible).
  • You don’t have the needed technology at home, or your loved one doesn’t qualify for at-home visits (consider an AFOI visitor center session instead).

Most people go with at-home visits when they have the right device and their loved one qualifies - it saves time and travel. AFOI visitor centers fill the gap when that's not the case, whether you lack reliable technology or at-home visits aren't an option for your loved one. Not sure which route to take? Start by confirming eligibility. That one detail usually makes the decision for you.
