How Attorneys Can Arrange a Deposition at the Travisono Intake Service Center

Scheduling a deposition at the Travisono Intake Service Center is a paperwork-first process. Start by getting the court's authorization (or a written stipulation), then route it through RIDOC's Office of Legal Counsel before coordinating a date and time with the facility.

Before you contact RIDOC about logistics, you need written authorization to depose someone housed there. That usually means filing a motion for leave under Rule 30(a)(2) and getting a court order, or securing a written stipulation that authorizes the deposition. Once you have the order or stipulation in hand, you can move on to RIDOC routing and scheduling.

Forward Order and Followup

  • Fax the order or written stipulation to the RIDOC Office of Legal Counsel at 401-462-2583
  • Email the order or written stipulation to diane.gill@doc.ri.gov
  1. Call the Legal Assistant to confirm receipt (401-462-5168). This follow-up helps ensure the order is in the right place and that the next steps are underway.
  2. Get the Deputy Warden contact for the correct facility. The Legal Assistant can provide the Deputy Warden’s phone number for where the person is housed and will forward the order to the Deputy Warden.

Once the order is routed, scheduling falls to you. Contact the facility's Deputy Warden to set the deposition date and time at the Travisono Intake Service Center. Have a headcount ready when you call. The facility needs to know how many people will be attending so it can plan accordingly.

  • Provide the full name and date of birth for any non-attorney who will attend (for example, a stenographer), so RIDOC can complete a background check before the deposition date
  • Bring your Bar card with you on the day of the deposition

Note: Even when depositions are approved, certain parts of the day are hard to book around, including meal times, recreation, and visiting hours.
