Before Your First Visit to Anthony P. Travisono Intake Service Center (ISC): What to Bring and What to Leave Behind

Before Your First Visit to Anthony P. Travisono Intake Service Center (ISC): What to Bring and What to Leave Behind

Travisono ISC is an intake and max-security facility, so expect a controlled entry process and tight rules on what comes inside. Visiting schedules aren't uniform across Rhode Island DOC facilities - each warden sets the visiting days, hours, visit length, weekly limits, and how many people can visit at once. Confirm the current ISC schedule before you leave home. You don't want to make the trip only to find the hours changed.

Reminder: Visiting days and hours (plus visit length and how many visitors can attend) are set by the facility warden, so always confirm the current ISC schedule before you travel.

Bring as little as possible. The medication rule is especially strict: nitroglycerin is the only life-saving medication visitors can bring into a visiting session. Staff won't secure any visitor medication for you. If you need medication with you, plan ahead and follow staff direction at check-in.

Skip the snacks and drinks. No food may be brought into the facility, with a limited exception for Minimum Security/Work Release - and even then, drinks aren't allowed. At ISC, the safest approach is simple: eat and hydrate before you arrive, and leave all food and beverages behind.

  • Leave all food at home (food is generally not allowed; the limited exception is Minimum Security/Work Release)
  • Don’t bring drinks, even if you’re headed to Minimum Security/Work Release (drinks still aren’t allowed)
  • Plan to store personal items (like coats and boots) in the facility lockers instead of carrying them in

If you arrive with items you can't bring into the visiting area, you're not stuck. The facility provides lockers where you can store belongings like coats and snow boots. You can take the locker key into the visiting room with you, so your essentials stay secured without being left unattended.

Heads up: The facility notice states that visitor photographs are suspended until further notice, so don’t count on being able to take a visiting photo during your trip.

Expect airport-style screening at the entrance. All visitors to RIDOC facilities, including Travisono ISC, must pass through a metal detector. You may also be asked to submit to a same-sex pat-down or a hand-held wand search by a correctional officer. Refuse, and your visit may be denied. Arrive with the mindset that screening is part of the process - and keep what you're carrying to a minimum.

Tip: Wear simple, low-metal clothing if you can. It makes the metal detector process faster and reduces the chances you’ll need a wand screening.

  1. Confirm the current visiting schedule before you go - At ISC, the visiting days/hours and other limits can change because the warden sets them.
  2. Arrive early and travel light - You’ll go through screening, and bringing less makes check-in easier.
  3. Dress for the metal detector - Skip extra metal (lots of jewelry, heavy accessories) to avoid delays.
  4. Plan for any special needs ahead of time - If you’ll need an accommodation, contact the facility in advance so you’re not troubleshooting at the front desk.

For the most current information, check the official Travisono ISC facility page and the RIDOC visitation page. That's where you'll find the latest visiting schedule (set by the warden) and facility notices - like the posted alert that visitor photographs are suspended until further notice.
