How Phone Calls Work at RIDOC: Call Lengths, Phone Lists, and Recording

Phone calls at RIDOC are capped at 20 minutes. That clock starts ticking immediately, so lead with your most important updates rather than saving them for the end. Attorney calls are the exception - those aren't subject to the 20-minute limit.

Note: The 20-minute call limit does not apply to calls between an inmate and their attorney.

Phone lists at RIDOC have hard limits. An inmate can have up to 10 personal numbers and up to 5 attorney numbers on file. Choose wisely - those slots fill up fast.

RIDOC records phone calls for security purposes. Assume every conversation is being recorded unless it's an exception. Attorney calls aren't recorded. Neither are calls with law enforcement agencies.

Heads up: You'll hear a notice at the start of the call letting you know it's being recorded.

How Phone Calls Work at RIDOC: Call Lengths, Phone Lists, and Recording
  1. Plan for a 20-minute conversation - Since most calls are capped at 20 minutes, lead with the essentials (health, kids, court dates, urgent family logistics) instead of waiting until the end.
  2. Keep attorney topics for attorney calls - Regular calls are recorded, so save legal strategy and other privileged discussions for calls with the attorney.
  3. Talk like someone else may hear it later - Because RIDOC records most calls and gives notice, stick to clear, factual updates and avoid sharing sensitive details you wouldn’t want repeated.
  • Expect most calls to end at 20 minutes (attorney calls are the exception)
  • Make sure your number is on the inmate’s approved phone list (10 social numbers and 5 attorney numbers max)
  • Assume calls are recorded and you’ll be told in advance (attorney and law-enforcement calls are exceptions)

Warning: Don't discuss legal strategy or sensitive case details on recorded lines. Save those conversations for attorney calls.
