What ID Do I Need to Visit Someone at RIDOC?
You'll need to show a valid photo ID when visiting someone in RIDOC custody. Bring the right one and you'll avoid a wasted trip—and a lot of frustration at the door.
RIDOC requires visitors to present photo identification. No acceptable ID? You won't get in. Check your wallet before you leave.
State-issued photo IDs are your safest bet. A valid driver's license works, as does any ID issued by the DMV or Department of Transportation.
Federal and military IDs work too. A valid military ID or passport will get you through check-in.
Don't have a driver's license? RIDOC also accepts valid IDs from the Department of Elderly Affairs and the Department of Administration.
Social Security cards and Welfare ID cards won't work - even if your name is on them. These trip people up regularly at check-in. Bring an accepted photo ID instead.
Bringing a child? Minors under 18 can use a birth certificate as identification. Adults accompanying them still need to show an accepted photo ID.
Note: RIDOC has suspended the taking of visitor photographs until further notice.
Practical Checklist
- ✓ A valid, accepted photo ID (for example: a driver’s license, a DMV/Department of Transportation-issued ID, a military ID, or a passport)
- ✓ If you’re bringing a minor, the minor’s birth certificate
- ✓ Do not rely on a Social Security card or a Welfare ID card - they are not accepted as visitor ID at RIDOC
