Visiting With Children and Visitor Eligibility at Jackson County Jail
Visiting with kids at Jackson County Jail comes with a few extra rules, especially around who qualifies as a juvenile visitor and how the 10-person visitor list works. Here's what to check before you schedule or travel.
At Jackson County Jail, juvenile visits are only allowed for AICs who have been incarcerated for 30 or more days, or who have been sentenced to 30 or more days. If the person you're visiting hasn't met that 30-day threshold yet, hold off on bringing a child until they do.
Tip: Before you make travel plans or arrange childcare, confirm the AIC meets the 30-day requirement for juvenile visits.
Not every minor qualifies as a "juvenile visitor." The jail limits juvenile visits to children who are the AIC's legal child or a child under the AIC's legal guardianship.
Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. There's also a minimum age rule: no one under age 10 is permitted to visit, even with an adult.
Bring proof if you have it: Have documentation of the legal relationship or guardianship ready in case staff ask. Also, children under 10 cannot visit.
Jackson County Jail uses an Active Visitor List system. Each AIC submits a list of up to 10 people approved to visit. If your name isn't on that list, you won't get in. Children can be included on the list, but they count toward the 10-person limit.
Talk with the AIC ahead of time about who should take up those limited spots. Only the AIC can change names on the Active Visitor List, and only through official correspondence. Family members can't update it at the front desk or on visiting day.
- ✓ Confirm you (and any children who will visit) are on the AIC’s Active Visitor List, which can include up to 10 people.
- ✓ Count children as part of the 10-person limit when you’re deciding who goes on the list.
- ✓ If the list needs changes, coordinate with the AIC since only the AIC can change names through official correspondence.
Some people aren't eligible to visit at all. You can't visit if you're currently on probation or parole. You're also ineligible if you've been incarcerated in this facility within the past 12 months.
If you're not eligible to visit: Ask about other ways to stay in touch, like alternatives to in-person visits.
Practical Checklist
- ✓ Confirm the AIC meets the rule for juvenile visits (incarcerated for 30+ days, or sentenced to 30+ days).
- ✓ Make sure the child qualifies (the AIC’s legal child or under the AIC’s legal guardianship).
- ✓ If the visitor is under 18, plan for a parent or legal guardian to accompany them.
- ✓ Do not bring children under age 10, they are not permitted to visit.
- ✓ Coordinate with the AIC on the Active Visitor List: it allows up to 10 people, and children count toward that 10.
- ✓ If anyone needs to be added or removed, the AIC must change names through official correspondence.
- ✓ Bring photo identification for all adult visitors.
If you're using the online scheduling system, keep the weekly window in mind. Scheduling is only available from Thursday at 1:00 pm through Friday at 6:00 pm. Outside that window, you won't be able to book a visit.
