Sending Money to an Inmate at James W. Allred Unit: Who Can Deposit and How

Not just anyone can send money to inmates at the James W. Allred Unit. Since September 1, 2020, TDCJ only accepts deposits from people on the inmate's Approved Visitation List or their approved phone list. That typically means close family and friends the inmate has already listed for visits, or someone whose phone number is set up for calls.

Payment Types

  • Money orders (must include a deposit slip from the inmate)
  • Cashier’s checks (must include a deposit slip from the inmate)
  • Cash (not accepted; will be returned)
  • Personal checks (not accepted; will be returned)

Sending a money order or cashier's check? You'll need to include the required deposit slip. TDCJ expects that slip to come from the inmate, so ask your loved one at Allred Unit to send it to you before you mail anything.

  1. Check whether you already have the TDCJ number - it may be on prior mail, paperwork, or messages from your loved one.
  2. Call to look it up if you don’t have it - use (936) 295-6371 or (800) 535-0283 to find the inmate’s TDCJ number.

If your deposit got rejected, check whether you're actually an approved sender. Two ways to qualify: the inmate adds you to their Approved Visitation List, or you register your phone through Securus to get on the Approved Phone List. Either one works. If you're on neither list, TDCJ won't accept the deposit.

Tip: Want to qualify through the phone list? You'll need to formally register your phone with Securus. Just being in contact with the inmate doesn't count as approved.

Practical Checklist

  • Confirm you’re an approved sender by being on the inmate’s Approved Visitation List or the Inmate Telephone (approved phone) list.
  • If you’re not on either list yet, have the inmate add you to the Approved Visitation List or register your phone with Securus to be placed on the Approved Phone List.
  • Get the deposit slip from the inmate before you send a money order or cashier’s check.
  • Use an accepted payment type: money order or cashier’s check (don’t send cash or a personal check - those are returned).
  • Make sure you have the correct TDCJ number; if you don’t, call (936) 295-6371 or (800) 535-0283 to look it up.
  • Include the deposit slip with the money order or cashier’s check so the deposit can be credited correctly.
