Your First Visit to Jefferson County Jail: What to Bring and How Check‑In Works
Your first visit goes much smoother when you know what staff expect at the door. This checklist covers the right ID to bring, where to check in, and the common mistakes that get people turned away.
Each inmate at Jefferson County Correctional Facility gets two one-hour visits per week, scheduled by the visitation officer. Here's the catch: the facility won't tell callers when those visits are. Your loved one has to share their assigned times with you directly.
Check in at the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building front lobby window. Staff will ask for your full name, address, and the name of the person you're visiting.
Arrive at least 20 minutes early. You'll need to show a valid photo ID with your date of birth, and running late can cost you the visit entirely.
ID and Info Sheet
- ✓ Valid photo ID that shows your date of birth
You'll also fill out an information sheet with your full name, address, physical description, and a valid phone number. Staff enter this into the facility database and cross-check it against your photo ID. Skip the form, and you won't be allowed into the contact visitation room.
Travel light. Jefferson County requires all personal items to go into the visitation locker room lockers, so bringing extra stuff just slows down your check-in.
- ✓ Jackets and coats
- ✓ Jewelry (except wedding rings)
- ✓ Belts
- ✓ Wallets
- ✓ Keys
- ✓ Cellphones
- ✓ Tobacco products
- ✓ Lighters
- ✓ Hats
- ✓ Bobby pins and hairpins
- ✓ Candy
- ✓ Food
- ✓ Gum
Dress code: The visitation officer has final say on what's appropriate. Short-shorts, skirts more than 3" above the knee, revealing or see-through tops, clothing with holes, vulgar T-shirts, and jackets or hooded sweat-type jackets can all get you turned away.
Most denied entries come down to check-in requirements. No valid photo ID with your date of birth? Turned away. Refused to complete the information sheet? Turned away. Brought prohibited items instead of locking them up? Same result. The visitation officer can also deny entry over clothing they deem inappropriate.
Warning: Violating visitation rules can have bigger consequences than a canceled visit - it may lead to a due process disciplinary hearing for the inmate and possible banning of the offending visitor(s).
Not sure what you can bring or wear? Figure it out before you go - don't wait until you're standing at the lobby window. If you do get turned away, ask staff exactly what needs to change, then follow the facility's visitation policies for your next attempt.
