Mail & Letters

Jefferson County contracts with Smart Communications' MailGuard service. Since Aug. 1, 2019, regular personal mail—letters, postcards, and greeting cards—goes to MailGuard's processing center in Seminole, FL. There it's scanned and delivered electronically. Inmates view their scanned mail through facility kiosks instead of receiving physical envelopes. Some items bypass MailGuard entirely: legal mail, money orders, and books shipped directly from publishers must go to the Jefferson County Correctional Facility street address in Beaumont, TX. Books will be refused if they aren't shipped directly from a book publishing company. After release, inmates can download their photos, messages, and scanned postal mail for free at smartjailmail.com using their inmate number and password.
