What to Bring (and What to Leave Home) for a Visit to Jim Rudd Unit
A smooth visit comes down to a few basics: confirm everything before you drive, bring the right ID, and leave prohibited items—especially your phone—behind.
Call the Jim Rudd Unit before you start the drive. Visitation details can change quickly - the schedule you checked earlier might not reflect a same-day cancellation. When you call, confirm your loved one is still assigned to Jim Rudd Unit and has visitation privileges. Verify that visitation hasn't been canceled for the unit that day. If you're unsure whether you're on the approved visitor list, ask now so you don't get turned away at the gate.
Adults 18 and older need a current, government-issued photo ID. Staff will check it before letting you in, so don't bring anything expired or unofficial.
Note: At least one of the IDs you use must show your current physical address. An exception can be made for certified victims of family violence who have address protection through the attorney general.
Don't bring paper money - it's not allowed. You can bring coins, but no more than $35 worth. Set that aside before you leave home.
No phones: Cell phones are not allowed inside the secure perimeter at Jim Rudd Unit during visits.
Expect screening when you arrive. Staff can search vehicles and visitors, and some items or clothing may be prohibited. Rules are enforced strictly, so keep what you bring to the bare minimum and dress conservatively. Not sure if something's allowed? Call the unit ahead of time and ask about current prohibited-items and clothing guidelines.
