How to Schedule Your First Visit at Joe Ney State Jail (step-by-step)

Scheduling your first visit at Joe Ney State Jail is mostly an online process. Once your account is set up and your relationship is approved, you can pick an available weekend time slot through the TDCJ Online Visitation Scheduler.

Joe Ney State Jail’s visiting days are Saturday and Sunday. Visiting hours run from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., so the appointment times you see in the Scheduler will fall inside that weekend window.

Before you go through the setup process, confirm that the person you want to visit is actually assigned to Joe Ney State Jail and still has visitation privileges. If their privileges have been removed, the Scheduler won't let you book. You'll see a status message instead of the Schedule Visit button.

  1. Go to the TDCJ Online Visitation Scheduler and choose Register - you have to create your own visitor account.
  2. Enter your email address and create your login - use an email you can access right now.
  3. Finish registration yourself - TDCJ staff cannot create visitor accounts for you.

Use an email address you plan to keep. Once an account is created with a specific email, it can't be changed in the system. After registering, watch for the verification email and complete those steps before moving forward with your account setup.

After you create a password that meets the system requirements, the Background Questionnaire will appear. Every question must be answered. The system won't let you move on if anything is left blank.

  • Re-enter your email address exactly as you registered it
  • Enter the key from the registration email (if prompted)
  • Create a password that meets all requirements, then re-type it to confirm
  • Answer every Background Questionnaire item (no blanks)
  • Fill out all required profile fields so the system can save your updates
  1. Click Add Inmate - this is how you connect your visitor profile to the person you want to visit.
  2. Search by their 8-digit TDCJ or SID number - the number must be 8 digits long.
  3. Choose your relationship and submit the request - when you request approval, the Scheduler sends a Relationship Request to the inmate’s unit of assignment.
  4. Wait for unit verification - unit staff must verify the visitor-inmate relationship before you can schedule a visit.

A pending Relationship Request usually means the unit hasn't finished verifying the visitor-inmate relationship yet, so scheduling isn't available. If the relationship has been confirmed but the inmate's visitation privileges have been removed, the Scheduler will show "Not Approved for Visits" where you'd normally see the Schedule Visit button.

Note: If the Schedule Visit button is blank, replaced by a message like "Call Unit," or shows "Not Approved for Visits," contact the inmate's unit of assignment. Visitation privileges and final approval are handled at the unit level.

Once the Schedule Visit button appears, you'll pick a visit type, then choose a date and time from the available options. The Scheduler lists four visit types, including Regular, Contact, and Video/Tablet (Video/Tablet is not the same as the Securus Video program). Since Joe Ney schedules visits on weekends between 8:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., the time slots you see will be limited to those Saturday and Sunday hours.

  • Look at the visit types that appear for your specific inmate, not every option is available in every situation
  • If Video/Tablet is offered, remember it is a different option than the Securus Video program
  • If Contact (or any other type) does not show up, choose from the options the system actually lists

Troubleshooting

  • Check your Relationship Request status, you cannot schedule until the unit verifies the visitor-inmate relationship
  • If you see “Not Approved for Visits,” the inmate’s visitation privileges have been removed, so the Scheduler will not show Schedule Visit
  • Make sure you completed the Background Questionnaire, every question must be answered before your account setup can continue
  • Re-check your profile for missing required fields, incomplete profiles can stop you mid-process
  • Confirm you searched and added the inmate using the correct 8-digit TDCJ or SID number

Note: If the Schedule Visit button is blank, shows "Call Unit," or reads "Not Approved for Visits," contact the unit of assignment directly. Unit staff handle relationship requests and control visitation privilege status.
