Sending Money to Someone at Joe Ney State Jail: Who Can Deposit and How

TDCJ limits who can deposit money into an inmate's trust fund account. Since September 1, 2020, only people on the inmate's approved visitor list or Inmate Telephone List can send funds. This is a security measure designed to protect inmates and staff. If you're not on one of those lists yet, get added before you try to send money.

Accepted Methods

  • Money orders
  • Cashier’s checks
  • Monthly checking account debit (ACH)
  • Access Corrections – Secure Deposits
  • ACE – America’s Cash Express
  • eCommDirect (provided by Texas.gov)
  • JPay
  • TouchPay Payment System

Planning to send a larger amount? Build in extra time. TDCJ places a 14-day hold on any single deposit of $500.00 or more before the inmate can access it. The same hold applies to certain disbursement checks - insurance, company, payroll, and estate checks - and similar payments.

Sending a money order or cashier's check? You'll need the right paperwork first. TDCJ requires these payments to include a deposit slip that comes from the inmate. Ask your loved one to send you the slip (or share the details from it) and include it with your payment. Without it, the deposit may not process correctly.

Practical Tips

  • Confirm you’re on the inmate’s approved visitor list or the Inmate Telephone List before you try to deposit money.
  • Pick a deposit option from the TDCJ Inmate Trust Fund deposit methods list (and stick to those methods).
  • Keep your receipt, confirmation number, or a copy of what you sent until the funds show up.
  • If timing matters, avoid surprises by planning around the 14-day hold that can apply to $500+ deposits and certain types of checks.
  • For money orders and cashier’s checks, make sure you include the deposit slip the inmate provides.
