Mail & Digital Mail at Johnston Unit: What You Can Send, Where to Address It, and Stationery Options
Mail rules can feel picky. But once you know where things go and what's off-limits, avoiding returns and delays gets much easier.
Personal mail routed through the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) Digital Processing Center must include the inmate's full first and last name and their TDCJ number. Send it to: Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Inmate's Full First and Last Name + TDCJ Number, PO Box 660400, Dallas, TX 75266-0400.
Reminder: Always include the inmate’s full first and last name plus their TDCJ number on Digital Processing Center mail.
Sending a letter directly to the unit? The envelope should show the inmate's name, their TDCJ number, and the unit address. TDCJ publishes unit addresses - check the official listing to make sure you're using the current format.

Keep it simple: don't mail
You usually don't need to mail writing supplies. Stationery - writing paper and envelopes - may be provided through the indigent correspondence supply program.
If your loved one isn't receiving supplies through the indigent program (or just needs more), stationery can be purchased at the unit commissary. Families and friends can also buy supplies through the eCommDirect program.
- Write the name and TDCJ number exactly - small errors can cause delays or misdelivery.
- Match the destination to what you’re sending - some items go to the Digital Processing Center, while others must be sent to the unit.
- Stick to mail-safe contents - avoid anything that looks like a package item (food, toiletries, clothing, jewelry).
- Confirm current rules before you send photos or specialty items - policies can change, and getting it right saves time and money.
Caution: Before mailing photos or anything unusual, confirm current requirements with the unit or Digital Processing Center. Otherwise, your mail might get rejected.
